RFID System Tips

Before starting any RFID compliance labeling project, RVB Systems Group recommends the following 10 tips.  Following these tips can help insure a successful RFID compliance labeling project and help you avoid costly non-compliance penalties.

RFID systems from RVB Systems Group

  1. Start early. It takes time to research the technology, select the right RFID system partner and align the organization.

  2. Get upper level management buy-in.  Without support from the top, RFID projects are doomed to failure just like any other major project.

  3. Choose supplies carefully. If your tags don't work, you risk missing deadlines for compliance and may face costly penalties.  HF, UHF, passive, active???  Help!

  4. Determine the specific how and where of RFID labeling. Will you incorporate RFID tags into your current shipping labels or will you add new label templates to your existing labeling system?  Where are labels labels best placed on the carton, pallet, etc.?  Answers to dozens of additional questions should be determined prior to startup.

  5. Select the right RFID partner.  Choosing the best partner is critical for RFID success.  Look for companies such as RVB Systems Group that are experienced in both RFID and barcodes as that these technologies fit hand-in-hand.  Your partner should also fit well with your existing applications and business processes.

  6. Start small and simple.  A simple pilot project is the best approach to any large project.  You can always expand after initial success.  How do you eat an elephant?  One bite at a time.

  7. Test, test, and then test some more.  RFID tags perform differently with different material, at different locations and at different channels within the HF and UHF spectrums.  Testing at the beginning of any RFID project is critical.

  8. Plan from the ground up.  If you are planning new construction, then your RFID system should be part of the initial site plan.

  9. Utilize the data.  Why just slap and ship? If you want true ROI for your RFID investment, then it is important to transport and translate the RFID data flow to upstream business applications.

  10. Plan for change.  Recognize that RFID is still a moving target. As with any emerging technology, there will continue to be advancements.  Therefore, the initial vendor relationships you establish will be critical as your implementation matures.
